Mechanical Engineering Graduate Programs

The Department of Mechanical Engineering offers programs leading to the Master of Science in Mechanical Engineering and the Doctor of Philosophy degrees. Research is conducted within the traditional core areas of solid mechanics and materials, thermofluids and heat transfer, dynamics and controls, and design.

The department offers three Master of Science options:

The Doctor of Philosophy degree is earned by completing a minimum of 60 hours of graduate credit course work, exclusive of the dissertation. Graduate credits earned while completing a Master of Science program are applicable to the Ph.D degree. Programs of study are developed by the dissertation advising committee and the student to meet the research objectives. Students should allow a minimum of three years beyond the Master of Science degree to complete this program.

The majority of M.S. and Ph.D. graduates find employment in private industry or in government laboratories. Recent graduates have been employed by Sandia, Chrysler, GM, John Deere, Texas Instruments, Shell Research, BP Amoco, Weber Aircraft, Apple Computer, Applied Materials, and Caterpillar.
