Post-Doctoral Research Associate

Dr. Sukalyan Bhattacharya, an assistant professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering, is looking for a post doctoral researcher for his NSF funded project "Radial migration of suspended particles and its effect on multispecies flow inside a conduit". The objective of the project is to find out relative importance of different factors like inertial effects or multiparticle interactions in the dynamics of suspended particles transporting through a conduit. The post doctoral researcher is expected to do mathematical calculations as well as extensive numerical coding to achieve the stated goal.

The potential candidates are expected to have a Ph.D. in either engineering or physics or mathematics, and would be judged based on four criteria. Firstly, he or she should demonstrate high level of mathematical expertise in prior research works. Secondly, extensive programming skill especially in fortran and matlab would be required. Thirdly, the candidates should have research experience in theoretical fluid mechanics. Finally, he or she should have clear fundamental knowledge in statistical mechanics. Apart from these technical proficiencies, good writing and communication skills would also be expected from the researcher.

The annual salary for this position will be approximately $34,000. The position must be filled by January, 15, 2012. Initially, the duration of the position would be for one year, which could be extended to another year depending on the performance of the researcher and the availability of the fund.
