ACADEMY OF MECHANICAL ENGINEERS - Texas Tech University

 

 

The Texas Tech University Academy of Mechanical Engineers was organized during the1991-92 academic year. The Academy recognizes alumni, supporters, and friends who have distinguished themselves through professional, civic and community accomplishments and who are personally willing to involve themselves in contributing to the continued development of the department and the success of its graduates. The Academy provides enrichment and support of mechanical engineering education through the involvement of and interaction with experienced professionals in the educational programs provided by the Department of Mechanical Engineering. Membership is limited to approximately 10 % of the living department alumni.

The purposes of the Academy are listed in its bylaws as follows:

• To honor, recognize, and celebrate the achievements of graduates of the Department of Mechanical Engineering, thus encouraging both current and future alumni and students.

• To identify nominees for recognition by the Department of Mechanical Engineering.

• To support the education programs at Texas Tech University to benefit students,alumni, and the profession of Mechanical Engineering.

• To provide a means of liaison and communication between the Department of Mechanical Engineering, faculty, students, Industrial Advisory Committee, and industry, particularly industries served by the graduates of the department. 

Included in the functions served by the Academy are the following:

• To encourage alumni and other professional to greater levels of involvement inthe educational process, especially in the Mechanical Engineering programs atTexas Tech University.

• To assist in the identification of contemporary issues important in the engineering profession and to identify possible ways and resources to address those issues.

• To provide or assist in providing speaker programs for classes, ASME student chapter meetings, seminars, other educational activities.

• To assist the Mechanical Engineering Department, the College of Engineering, and Texas Tech University in identifying and developing financial resources to support educational, research, and professional services missions.  Membership in the academy is extended to living individuals who hold a degree in Mechanical Engineering from Texas Tech University or who have provided outstanding support to the Mechanical Engineering Department and have distinguished themselves in their career and are 15 or more years past graduation.

The annual meeting of the Academy is typically held on campus on a Friday - Saturday in March or April. The dinner and induction ceremony are held on Friday evening and the annual business meeting is held the following morning in the Department of Mechanical Engineering.
